This work, inspired by the view of the pond of La Folie, near Trelon (Nord), expresses the peaceful and green charm of the landscapes of woods and fens characteristic of the Avesnois.
" On the pond " is a romantic barcarolle, musical genre dear to Chopin and Fauré. Composed in 1929, it was considered by the author as one of his only two works "of circumstance" i.e. written to illustrate a precise landscape.
The slow barcarolle movement of "Sue l'étang" gives it a calm rhythm, that of the boat moving on the water. It gives an impression of serenity, something luminous, expressive of this haven of peace that is the pond of Folie in the middle of the woods.
