Jean-Marie Lemarchand obtained a higher diploma in composition from the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris in 2004. He quickly turned to writing for orchestra, writing music for short films and a concerto for guitar and orchestra. He reached the final of the young composers' competition in Boulogne Billancourt in 2007.
