A collection of 23 short pieces of various levels for solo or accompanied organ
Jean-René ANDRE
FLORILÈGE
For organ
I had for a long time this idea to propose a series of small pieces for organists (following in particular the publication in 2008 of my "Miniatures" by the National Association of Liturgical Organists). The unfortunate episode of the coronavirus crisis, and singularly the period of confinement of the period from March to May 2020, has freed the time necessary to the realization of this often postponed project.
In this particular school year 2019-2020, 22 young and not so young organists are valiantly following my teaching in the Organ School of the Saint-Vincent Providence school complex in Rennes.
Each of them is the dedicatee of one of the pieces presented here. It is a friendly wink of course but also, for each one, an incentive to progress on such or such precise point at a given moment of its course.
Note that, at the end of the collection, I have added a last piece written for Gilles Manchec, director of the Brasavel publishing house, to whom I wished to send a small token of friendship and recognition for the trust he has shown me over the last few years, as he hands over to a new team.
More broadly, this "anthology" can be considered as a collection of short pieces that could be useful at one time or another in the life of an organist... Beyond the purely technical aspects to which each of the pieces is interested, it also seemed interesting to me to add a more "functional" dimension and I am referring here to the beautiful mission of accompanying organist. Thus, for example, the formula organ and bombard (very appreciated in Brittany!) is declined in one of them. Elsewhere, there are two proposals for the accompaniment of congregational songs (a chorale and a traditional Breton hymn) which can be easily implemented. Some of these pages could also find their place in liturgy.
In any case, I hope that everyone will find something to discover in the practice of their favorite instrument... while having fun!
Jean-René André
Jean-René André teaches organ at the Organ School of the Saint Vincent Providence School in Rennes, where he also accompanies the Choral Art Center, attached to the same establishment.
Liturgy and sacred texts as well as his native Brittany are the main sources of inspiration for his composing activity.
He is also titular organist of the great organs of the cathedral of Rennes.
